Abstract

This study examined the influence of Transformational leadership practices on the development of employability abilities among students in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in the Southwest Region of Cameroon. Specifically, the study assessed the effects of idealised influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualised consideration on students’ employability skills. A mixed-methods approach based on a concurrent triangulation design was employed. Quantitative data were collected from 505 students by structured questionnaires using cluster sampling, whereas qualitative data were obtained from interviews with 30 purposively selected teachers and administrators. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and multiple linear regression, whereas qualitative data were analysed thematically. The findings showed that although transformational leadership practices were implemented at generally low levels, all four dimensions had statistically significant positive effects on employability skills. Intellectual stimulation emerged as the strongest predictor, followed by inspirational motivation, individualised consideration, and idealised influence. Qualitative findings additionally emphasised the value of ethical role modelling, learner support, innovation in training, and industry collaboration regarding enhancing employability outcomes. The study determines that strengthening transformational leadership practices remains essential for improving the quality and relevance of TVET. The study contributes empirical evidence on the role of transformational leadership in improving TVET effectiveness and provides practical recommendations for strengthening graduate employability through leadership development, curriculum innovation, learner support, and enhanced industry collaboration
