Abstract

Generative AI is increasingly used in programming education. Tools such as ChatGPT, GPT-4, and GitHub Copilot can generate code, explain concepts, support debugging, and provide feedback. This review examines recent studies on generative AI in programming education, focusing on learning support, feedback generation, and assessment challenges. The findings show that generative AI can help students understand concepts, fix errors, and receive quick guidance. It can also help teachers prepare materials and reduce grading workload. However, it may also lead to overreliance, weak critical thinking, shallow understanding, and problems in homework, grading, plagiarism detection, and assessment validity. The review concludes that generative AI should be used as a guided support tool, not as a replacement for programming practice or teacher guidance.
