Urbanization and Its Effects on Traditional Community Structures: A Sociological Perspective

Prakasha D N

1 August 2025 · Vol. 1, Issue 2, pp. 22-31

Abstract

Urbanization, driven by industrialization, economic development, and population growth, has dramatically transformed traditional community structures. This study examines the sociological implications of urbanization on social cohesion, family systems, cultural practices, and interpersonal relationships in both developing and developed societies. Using a mixed-method approach—literature review, survey analysis, and case studies (Tables 1 and 2)—the research investigates how rural-to-urban migration, modernization, and technological influences affect communal ties. Findings indicate that urbanization often weakens traditional kinship networks, reduces informal support systems, and alters cultural norms. However, urban communities also develop new forms of social interaction, such as neighborhood associations, online communities, and social clubs. The study concludes that while urbanization challenges traditional structures, it also creates opportunities for evolving social networks, necessitating adaptive strategies to maintain community cohesion.
