Mental Health Awareness and Stigma in Marginalized Communities: A Human Rights Approach

Abstract

Mental health remains one of the most neglected aspects of public health globally, with marginalized communities bearing a disproportionate burden due to socio-economic disadvantage, cultural exclusion, and limited access to care. This research paper explores the intersection of mental health awareness, societal stigma, and human rights within marginalized populations. By examining communities such as Dalits in India, indigenous populations in Latin America, and racial minorities in urban slums, the paper highlights how mental health issues are often silenced or dismissed due to social hierarchy, poverty, and discrimination. Despite growing global recognition of mental health as a human right, stigma continues to act as a barrier to access and quality of care. This paper uses a rights-based lens to assess the effectiveness of mental health campaigns and legal protections, while also analyzing structural inequalities that prevent community-wide acceptance and support. The study concludes that mental health reform must be integrated into broader social justice movements to be effective, and calls for culturally sensitive, community-rooted, and legally supported mental health frameworks that prioritize dignity, equality, and access.
