Abstract

In an increasingly competitive and globalized world, startups in emerging markets face unique challenges and opportunities. Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) and innovation capability are now considered twin pillars of survival and success in these regions. This study critically examines the intricate relationship between EO—which includes innovativeness, proactiveness, and risk-taking—and the capacity of startups to innovate within the volatile contexts of emerging markets such as India, Brazil, Nigeria, Indonesia, and Vietnam. By combining qualitative insights from interviews with 250 startup founders and quantitative data from structured surveys, this research uncovers how EO directly influences the innovation capability of startups. Findings indicate that while EO generally has a strong positive effect on innovation capability, the dominant influencing dimension differs by country due to variations in policy environment, cultural factors, funding access, and institutional support. The study's comparative approach offers deeper insights into the adaptability and strategic behavior of startups operating under constraint-driven circumstances. It further emphasizes the importance of ecosystem-level support to enhance entrepreneurial effectiveness and technological advancement. The implications of this study are particularly useful for policymakers, incubators, accelerators, and venture capitalists who seek to nurture high-growth startups and improve innovation outputs in emerging economies.
