Nuclear Security Dilemma, Combating WMD Proliferation Threats: A Policy-Level Comparative Study of the United States, Russia, and China (Case Study)

Abstract

Since its emergence, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons, has posed an existential threat to human civilization. This threat became particularly acute during the Cold War, which established a nuclear security dilemma between the world’s major powers. Its aftermath further complicated the global landscape, with the rise of new nuclear states and rogue actors seeking access to such weapons. Therefore, this study examines the roles and the policies of the United States, Russia, and China in combating the WMD proliferation through international treaties, bilateral agreements, and disarmament initiatives. This study also points out that the nuclear security dilemma still persists among these same powers, despite sustained and continuous efforts at disarmament.
