Abstract
Internal displacement, unlike international migration, often receives limited academic and policy attention despite affecting millions of individuals worldwide. In countries like India, Nigeria, Colombia, and the Philippines, large populations are displaced due to development projects, armed conflicts, environmental disasters, or ethnic violence. These displacements, while occurring within national borders, create profound disruptions to individuals’ cultural identity, social belonging, and psychological well-being. This research paper explores how internal displacement affects cultural identity, and how the loss of traditional community structures and familiar environments contributes to mental health distress and social marginalization. Using a qualitative approach informed by psychological and anthropological frameworks, this study analyzes the lived experiences of internally displaced persons (IDPs), focusing on identity reconstruction, social integration, and emotional trauma. Data is drawn from case studies in India (tribal communities displaced due to mining) and Nigeria (conflict-induced displacement). The findings reveal that dislocation leads to identity fragmentation, increased stress, and cultural dissonance. The paper recommends holistic rehabilitation strategies that combine livelihood assistance, community rebuilding, and cultural continuity programs to support the displaced in reclaiming agency and psychological resilience.
