Abstract

In an era of rapid technological advancement and escalating environmental challenges, the integration of emerging technologies into sustainable innovation is critical for achieving global sustainability goals. This study presents a comparative analysis of how China and the United States—two global technology powerhouses with contrasting governance systems—harness emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and green infrastructure to drive sustainable development. Employing a qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) framework, the research evaluates policy documents, academic literature, and innovation metrics across six dimensions: policy coherence, speed of implementation, private sector role, infrastructure investment, innovation diversity, and sustainability focus. The findings reveal that China's state-led, centralized model excels in rapid, large-scale deployment and green infrastructure investment, while the U.S. thrives on a decentralized, market-driven ecosystem that fosters entrepreneurial diversity and disruptive innovation. Despite their divergent approaches, both nations demonstrate complementary strengths. The study highlights cross-learning opportunities, suggesting that a hybrid approach—combining China's infrastructural coordination with the U.S.'s agile innovation ecosystem—could offer the most effective pathway toward achieving inclusive and scalable sustainable innovation globally.
