Educational Innovations in Music and Physical Education for Sustainable Development (ESD): A Multidisciplinary Paradigm Shift in the 21st Century

Abstract

In the context of the 21st century, education systems worldwide are facing rapid digital transformation alongside growing public health challenges associated with sedentary lifestyles and declining physical activity among children and youth. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) therefore requires innovative, integrative approaches that meaningfully connect learning, health, and quality of life. This article aims to critically analyze and propose a multidisciplinary framework for integrating music and physical education/sport as a strategic mechanism for promoting holistic well-being and lifelong learning in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 4 (Quality Education).Drawing on a systematic review of interdisciplinary literature in neuroscience, educational psychology, sport science, and educational technology, the analysis demonstrates that the integration of rhythmic processing, auditory–motor coupling, and digital innovations—such as AI-driven interactive music applications—significantly enhances intrinsic motivation, motor efficiency, and learner engagement compared to traditional physical education models. Music-supported movement is shown to function not only as an affective stimulus but also as an external temporal scaffold that reduces cognitive load and facilitates effective motor learning.The article further presents empirical and conceptual examples, including the application of Dalcroze Eurhythmics and mobile-based sport technologies, to illustrate how music–movement integration can foster learner-centered, inclusive, and sustainable learning experiences. Finally, strategic recommendations are offered for educational institutions and policymakers, emphasizing curriculum redesign, authentic assessment, and transdisciplinary teacher professional development to support the creation of resilient, technology-enhanced learning ecosystems. The study concludes that integrating music and sport within the ESD framework represents a transformative paradigm shift capable of advancing sustainable health behaviors and holistic human development in the digital age.
