Abstract

This study examined the relationship between community policing participation and crime reduction among the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) in Ikorodu West and Ikorodu Central, Lagos State. Employing a descriptive survey research design, data were collected from 384 respondents using a structured five-point Likert scale questionnaire. Descriptive statistics (frequencies, percentages, mean) were utilized for data analysis, while Pearson Product-Moment Correlation tested the hypothesis at a 0.05 significance level. Findings revealed a strong, positive, and statistically significant relationship between community policing participation and crime reduction (r = 0.868$, p = 0.003, N = 384). Key crime-prevention strategies identified included community education, training, technology utilization, social media information sharing, and institutional collaboration. Conversely, ineffective communication, limited awareness, mutual distrust, low cooperation, and resource deficits constrained public participation. The study concludes that active civic involvement is vital for effective community-based security. It recommends that the LNSC and relevant stakeholders enhance community engagement, foster public trust, improve communication frameworks, and provide adequate logistical and technological support for localized security operations.

Keywords: Community policing, community participation, crime reduction, Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, Ikorodu, community security.
